‘‘Religious laws are made for the poor’’ were the words of a Nigerian Catholic Priest, Fr. Kelvin Ugwu in reaction to the Hijab controversy in Ilorin, Kwara State.
Well, I don’t think he is incorrect if he says this. In most cases, the rich get away with religious laws and even civil laws. While in other cases, they just overlook some of these laws because they are better educated, have a liberal mind and would rather avoid unnecessary religious laws and practices than indulge in them.
I’m not sure that the hijab controversy would have been an issue in an ivy league school or in private owned schools save for Nigerian Public schools. Students from 10 different schools had to stay back home because the government wanted to decide if they can use a head-covering or not.
What is your reaction to this? In what way do you feel that religious laws only apply to the poor?
