NYSC Controversy: Former Minister of Finance Kemi Adeosun Cleared by the Court

Kemi Adeosun was the former minister of finance who was accused of presenting a fake NYSC discharge certificate, in the midst of the controversy, she resigned her appointment as Minister of Finance and returned to the United Kingdom.

And in response to the accusation, Kemi sued the federal government as well as the Attorney General of the Federation.

After a three year battle, she has finally been acquitted by the court after Justice Taiwo Taiwo of the Abuja Division of the Federal High Court declared that the former minister did not need the National Youth Service Scheme (NYSC) discharge certificate to take up ministerial appointment in the country.

Now, there are two listed reasons why Kemi Adeosun shouldn’t have issues with her NYSC certificate:

  1. Adeosun, who graduated in a London University in 1989, was already 36 years old at the time. This means that she will be automatically exempted from the compulsory exercise.

  2. The former minister was a United Kingdom citizen having been born there in 1967 and remained there till 2003 when she came back to Nigeria.

This means that, Adeosun became a Nigerian citizen by virtue of the 1999 Constitution which came into force on May 29, 1999 and therefore was not affected by the NYSC Act.

Justice Taiwo said that Adeosun would have committed a grave crime against Nigeria, if she had participated in the NYSC having attained the exemption age of 36 years.

My question now is, how come they weren’t aware of this before now?

I believe that this is another evidence that depicts how Nigerians can hold their Politian’s accountable, but they just to be women.

Look at the case of pantami, even with all the evidence found against him, he was strongly supported by the government and they even pleaded on his behalf, meanwhile Kemi Adeosun had to step down from her ministerial position.

What your thoughts on this?

Its been 3 long years, do you think that her former position will be reinstated?
