Germany to Return Stolen Benin Artifacts After 125 Years

It’s been 125 years since hundreds of artifacts were taken from Benin, Nigeria by British soldiers during a raid in 1897 and after several calls for these artefacts to be returned to their home during the black lives matter protests, Monika Gruetters, the minister of Culture in Germany announced that these collection would go back to Nigeria to bring ‘understanding and reconciliation with the descendants of those whose cultural treasures were stolen.’

In short, these artefacts are set to be returned to Nigeria in 2022 and in relation to this, Nigeria plans to build a museum to showcase these artefacts on their arrival to their home country.
