It is no news that the Federal Government of Nigerian has placed an indefinite ban on twitter following the deletion of President Muhammadu Buhari’s tweet which incited a genocide.
Of course, this ban was met with a lot of resistance from Nigerians and other foreign bodies. And as expected, Nigerians have devised another means through the use of VPN to continue to gain access to the social media application.
The federal government have now released a statement stating that the indefinite ban on the app can be lifted only if the app can be utilized responsibly.
To cut the long story short, I believe that the Nigerian government will very much want to supervise and control the use of social media and what people use the internet for. If not, why would they be concerned about the responsible use of social media.
Aren’t there other pressing issue to attend to? Kidnapping and banditry is still on the rise in Nigeria and it seems like it will go on forever because the government pays little attention to it.
What are your thoughts on this?
Do you think that the ban on twitter will be lifted soon, or will Nigerians have to wait till 2023 when Buhari leaves his seat before they can use the social media app again?
Does the banning of twitter seem justified to you or you believe that it also impedes one’s universal human right to speech and expression?
