Its no news that quite a number of persons converged for a peaceful protest at the Lekki Toll Gate, and as expected, they were arrested. They were arrested for engaging in a peaceful protest in a democratic nation, ironic right?
Well, not only were they arrested, they were stripped and kept in harsh conditions in a police van. One of the protesters arrested was Mr. Macaroni, a popular Nigerian comedian who documented the event as it was escalating. He was also beaten and maltreated alongside other protesters that were arrested. Eventually they were charged at the provided mobile court and a bail for a hundred thousand naira was set.
My question is… Is it a crime to protest in Nigeria? Although, we have a right to peaceful gathering, why then are youth being arrested for doing so?
