Issues like this don’t break the internet everyday, but i believe that this should be celebrated.
As a Nigerian, imagine birthing your child and not having your name on his or her birth certificate despite housing the child in your body for nine months. The feeling would be horrible right?
Well, this was a normal practice for Afghanistan mothers until they rose up against this rule and went through a three year campaign and protested with the hashtag #WhereIsMyName.
The Afghan President, Ashraf Ghani eventually signed an amendment allowing mothers’ names to be included on their children’s birth certificates as a movement toward gender equality.
I also believe that this is a big step towards gender equality in the Middle East and a huge sign that the human right activists have not been protesting in vain. What are your thoughts on this?
